This spelling inventory:

  • is EASY to use!

  • is extremely effective as a spelling inventory assessment.

  • is designed to determine each child's word part knowledge through a developmental spelling inventory

  • can guide explicit instruction and independent practice for spelling - making it ALL individualized for every kiddo! NO MORE GIVING THEM ALL THE SAME SPELLING LIST!

Did you know spelling research supports the BEST way to teach spelling is an individualized approach through the use of a spelling inventory primary through upper elementary?

It's true! The best practices in spelling instruction tell us that spelling should be taught through word parts and spelling patterns with a spelling inventory (like this one!) guiding that instruction.

  • Using a spelling inventory acknowledges that there is not a one-size-fits-all program or set of spelling lists.

  • A spelling inventory is a set of words that include common word parts. By asking children to spell these words on the spelling inventory, you will be able to gain insight on their word part knowledge – and the parts they need instruction on.

Use this spelling inventory whatever way is most meaningful for you and your kiddos. But here are my BEST TIPS:

  • Always start by telling your students that some of the words will be easy and some will be hard – the most important thing to remember with a spelling inventory is just to encourage them to write every sound they know! It's like a test but a no pressure test because you actually expect them to get some wrong!

  • A spelling inventory is given like a traditional spelling test. Read each word and say the word in a sentence. Repeat the word again. Children will write the words from the spelling inventory in a list.

  • The spelling inventory begins with simple words and progressively includes more complex words. Encourage your kiddos along the way.

  • Give the assessment several times throughout the year (I suggest 3) to monitor progress.

⭐️ You'll LOVE this spelling inventory elementary version for your students and will be amazed at how it influences your instruction in a powerful way! ⭐️
