Spring Break at Home
Looking for the BEST Spring Break at home ideas? Search no further! Because I was searching too, and I’m sharing all of the details with you here in one spot to make things easy! I’ve got 3 kids under 8, so I’m opting out of major travel this year and choosing to stay close to home. Because traveling with kids is not for the faint of heart!
Now, I have friends who travel everywhere with their kids. They literally took their 3-year-old from Michigan to Greece for vacay! Not kidding! I think they are real-life superheroes. What amazing family memories! I’m working on getting braver with my crew and traveling - but it’s great to have FUN Spring Break ideas for home too…
Anyway, we’re staying home this year. But as the founder of The Literacy Camp, a former classroom teacher, and a pretty fun mom (at least I like to think so), I’ve got some ideas for bringing the fun to Spring Break at home!
So here you go, friends. Grab your coffee and pencil in your planner these Spring Break at home ideas you WILL NOT WANT TO MISS!
Spring Break at Home Activities
So maybe you and yours are planning a Spring Break at home too. Maybe you’re even trying to balance something fun for your kids to do but you also need to keep working.
Spring Break comes for the kiddos - but that doesn’t always mean it comes for the parents too. Parents everywhere are working hard while also trying to balance taking care of their beautiful kiddos on school breaks.
So I’ve got some Spring Break at home ideas that are more of the hands-on parent approach as well as the I-love-my-kids-but-also-I’m-busy approach. :)
Let’s start with a grab-and-go type list that you can pull from in order to find what might best work for you. These Spring Break at home activities are great for most age level kiddos and can be adjusted to work regardless of the climate you live in. My favorite is #3 … but I can’t wait to hear what you and your family love the best!
#1 Seed Planting & Learning Fun
Make this one simple, parents. Add a few seedlings to your grocery order (or order this adorable variety pack) and be ready to plant those babies in some styrofoam cups. Write what you’re growing on each cup with a Sharpie and pop them in the nearest windowsill.
Now let the learning begin! Kiddos could spend time:
journaling about the planting process
drawing pictures of what they see
searching for information in books or online about what they are growing, etc.
Or, if you’ve got your own garden outside or a place that you can plant outdoors, by all means - plant away! Getting kids outdoors is even better! I just happen to still sometimes see snow at our house during Spring Break. If you’ve got soil and sunshine, get those green thumbs moving!
# 2 Easter Egg Letter & Word Matching!
Next up, depending on when your Spring Break at home falls on the calendar, you might just be getting ready to celebrate with Easter eggs and candy at the same time!
Now, I’ve got a bin of plastic Easter eggs that live in the basement for 11 months of the year, but I usually pull them out right about now. This year, I’m adding some learning to the eggs by way of egg letter and word matching - SO FUN. And even better, SO EASY.
Write upper and lowercase letters on each side of the Easter eggs
Hide them separately around the house.
Kiddos find them and match them up with their partners!
Make it more challenging by doing word families instead of letter matching, i.e., one egg half says “ot,” while the other egg half choices say “h,” “r,” and even “sn.” That’s right, I’ve got little boys around here, and I like to keep things interesting and giggle inducing.
So hide those Easter eggs during Spring Break at home - but add a learning element to make things fun. And of course - you may want to have a few Peeps on hand to pass out to the kids who most quickly match all of their eggs. :)
#3 Indoor Beach & Book Day
Yup - this one’s simple but brings a big punch in the area of FUN AND getting kids reading!
Basically, we pretend it’s SUMMER inside and READ ON THE “BEACH”! That means we crank up the heat (or pull out those space heaters), put on our beach gear, and lay out the beach towels for basking in the sun!
And have the kids read ALL THE BOOKS. That’s right. Independently read while Mama reads her own book, kids. Then, yes, we can read 12 chapters of your chapter book in one sitting! We’ll just eat cereal for lunch!
Play some beach tunes in the background while you flip through every picture book you own.
Time to plan ahead? Check out a BIG stack of beach books from the library! This makes this trip to the beach (aka the living room) extra fun!
*Bonus points if you live near a beach and can actually pack a bag of books and venture there with your kiddos for a day over Spring Break! My fam is living in the land of snow, remember? But you do you, Mama!
